Neuro-psychological Evaluations for Adults and Teens

Briefly, a neuropsychological evaluation (commonly shortened to neuropsych testing) determines how your brain is functioning in specific areas. At NeuroClinic and Assessments, we evaluate teens and adults of all ages, including older adults. (We can also make referrals for pediatric patients.)

Overview of Neuropsychological Testing

Neuropsychological testing uses a range of tests. The purpose of this testing is to determine if the brain is not functioning as expected.

Our Testing:

  • Looks for known patterns in abilities.
  • Matches patterns with your known symptom complaints and your medical history.

Healthcare professionals then use these results to promote understanding and guide treatment.

We conduct all our testing services in person at our offices.

Reasons to Schedule a Neuropsychological Testing

Your doctor may recommend a neuropsychological evaluation, or you (or a loved one) may decide to schedule neuropsychological testing. Many different situations might prompt a physician or self-referral. Broadly, these include the following situations:

  • Troubling New or Worsening Symptoms.
  • Assessment or Monitoring of a Medical Condition.

Troublesome New or Worsening Symptoms

One reason you might schedule a neuropsychological evaluation is when you, your family members, or caregivers notice new or worsening symptoms.

These symptoms might include any of the following:

  • Memory loss
  • Attention or concentration difficulties
  • Poor organizing and planning
  • Difficulty multitasking or following a series of steps
  • Language difficulty (e.g., difficulty finding a commonly used word, naming an everyday item, slurred speech, or speaking gibberish)
  • Problems with visual skills
  • Difficulties with writing or reading
  • Unexplained changes in behavior
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty performing familiar tasks
  • Getting lost in known areas

Assessment or Monitoring of a New or Existing Medical Condition

A second reason for scheduling a neuropsychological evaluation is to monitor or assess a specific medical condition.

These new or existing medical conditions might include:

  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Stroke (called cerebral vascular events or CVAs)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Traumatic brain injuries, such as a fall, car accident, or work injury
  • Suspected or known learning disabilities (e.g., problems with processing language, difficulties with reading, writing, or calculating math problems)

How a Neuropsychological Evaluation Helps

An evaluation can help:

  • Confirm a suspected diagnosis or provide a second opinion.
  • Validate daily struggles.
  • Determine if what you’re experiencing is within normal limits.
  • Guide your (or your loved one’s) treatment plan.
  • Clear the way before your surgery.
  • Track any cognitive changes over time.
  • Determine the level of care needed, if any.
  • Document the current severity of an injury/illness.
  • Help determine what therapy may be most helpful.
